Untying the text

In recent years the controversial "structuralist" movement in literary theory has moved into a less understood "post-structuralism". Since the 1960 many writers associated with the movement hace produced work that is directly critical of its early assumptions. Untying the text presents to the English-speaking reader a large an representative selection of the most important practical work of the post-structuralists. Some of this material has appeared previously in periodicals, some has been translated from the French for this volume and two articles have been especially written for it. But little of the work collected here is purely theoretical: the reader is introduced to the new approach by seeng it in action, in its application to specific literary texts.
