What happens when we read something? Is the text before us a documentary record of something that exists or has existed before, or is it a reformulation of an already formulated reality, to be broken down and reassembled by the mind of the reader? An understanding of what happens during the reading process, says Wolfgang Iser in The act of reading, is basic to the development of a theory of aesthetic response, because reading sets in motion a whole chain of activities that depends both on the tex and on the exercise of certain human faculties.
