The "Lectures on government and binding" were first presented during a workshop which followed the annual GLOW conference at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa., April 1979. In these lectures, Prof. Chomsky presents what is probably the most radical revision of the Extenden standard theory of transformational generative grammar since his "Conditions on transformations". This is the firs book since "Aspects of the theory of syntax" in which a comprehensive account of our present understanding of the structure of syntactic theory is presented.
