The German writer known as Jean Paul —Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825)— was one of the most original minds of the period of European literature spanning de Enlightenment and Romanticism. Yet, with a reputation for being untranlatable and inaccessible, he is barely known to modern readers.
