reseña:
The German writer known as Jean Paul —Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825)— was one of the most original minds of the period of European literature spanning de Enlightenment and Romanticism. Yet, with a reputation for being untranlatable and inaccessible, he is barely known to modern readers. Even ar the height of his popularuty among English readers, in the days of Carlyle and De Quincey, the vogue was the romantic and sentimental rather than the satirical and surprinsingly "modern" Jean Paul.
With Jean Paul: A reader Timothy and Erika Casey take uo the challenge of making the real Jean Paul accessible to English readers. Their collection offers satrling proof that Jean Paul is indeed the most modern and progressive of the great German writers, with his parody of the political establisment, his sendup of post-Kantian Idealism, his satire of male-dominated society, and above all, his anticipation of the twentieth-century´s sense og angst and the absurd. His rich and complex work reflects both intellectual curiosity and unbounded imagination; it deserves rediscovery.
