Finnegans Wake, wrote Anthony Burgess, is a puzzle, just as a dream is a puzzle, but the puzzle element is less important than the thrust of the narrative and the shadowy majesty of the characters. Many people spend a great deal of time and ingenuity unravelling the puzzle. Many more enjoy the book for its down-to-earth humanity and for its sublime conspectus of the whole universe, and finally for its optimistic belief in man.
